Bibliometric resources like Dimensions are usually built for evaluating current researchers and institutions — using them for historical research raises a different set of questions. How complete is the dataset going back in time? Do modern research-area classifications even apply to older periods? What about non-English publications, or countries that changed borders, like West and East Germany? This webinar walks through an approach for comparative historical analysis of research output built on the Dimensions Analytics dataset, laying out the biases and pitfalls encountered along the way — and closing with a spark of hope.
